ALS has always been an important cause for Phi Delta Theta Indiana-Mu. We raise money for the LiveLikeLou Foundation, which was founded by a fellow brother, Neil, and is now run by his wife, Suzanne. Suzanne took over the operations of the Foundation when her husband passed away after being diagnosed with ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The diagnosis is 100% fatal. Once you get the diagnosis you generally live for two to five years. The disease affects the lives of 20,000 Americans each year. Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes someone loses their battle to this terrible disease. There is no therapy. There is no cure. Yet!
So what does LiveLikeLou do? They are 100% run by volunteers and spend the money raised in two ways. 1. They provide research grants to help find a cure. 2. They help provide support to families who have been impacted by ALS. The expenses that come along with an ALS diagnosis are almost insurmountable. LiveLikeLou provides scholarships to students who have a parent who has been diagnosed with ALS. They also help to provide other care to affected families to help minimize the financial impact on the family as a whole.
ALS is a horrific disease, but we can help those impacted. Please consider running with us on September 19th to help make an impact. If you are unable to make it to the race, please consider giving a small donation to the cause.
