The 53rd Annual Groundhog 7-Miler/5-Miler Run/Walk
Register Here! Volunteer Here!
Thanks again to all who joined us for the 2024 Groundhog. We were able to raise another $3500 for the Zionsville Food Pantry plus several boxes of additional food donations as well.
Back by popular demand, we’re excited to host the 7-miler version of the Groundhog once again in 2025!
New for 2025
We’re pleased to bring back the classic Groundhog 7-mile distance to rejoin our new fun 5-mile version – still with Phil’s Hill to the south, then 7-milers add on a bit north and back on the Rail Trail before rejoining Mulberry Street to the finish at the high school.
Time Cut Off:
We do need to ask for folks wanting to do the 7-miler to keep up a 14:00 min/mile pace. Our course sentry at Mulberry Street (Mile 4.5) will be diverting everyone after that to just take the 5-mile route back to the high school.
Thanks again for all the great support over the years. We’re looking forward to another fun day of racing and giving back.
When:
Sunday, February 2, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. EDT (on Groundhog Day this year!)
Optional Long Sleeve Tech Shirt (Only $18):
We’ll have a nice high visibility long sleeve tech shirt for purchase to add to your Groundhog gear collection. Proceeds support the Erika Wells Memorial Scholarship.
Where:
Zionsville Community High School Freshman Center
1000 Mulberry Street Zionsville, IN 46077
Pre-Registration:
Pre-registration is online only and does NOT include a registration fee. Pre-registration closes Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 11:59 a.m. EDT.
Day-Of Registration:
Day-of registration opens at 11:30 a.m. and will be held inside the high school.
While you may register on race day, please strongly consider pre-registering to help us with logistics.
Cost:
Registration for the Groundhog is FREE, and once again we will be collecting donations for the Zionsville Food Pantry. We’ll again be collecting monetary donations to support the food pantry this year, in lieu of actual food donations (per their request). Thanks again for all the great support over the years.
Course Details:
The race will begin at Zionsville Community High School and continue along the scenic Zionsville Rail Trail. Runners and walkers will pass through several Zionsville neighborhoods and finish back at the high school. There will be one water stop. However, there are no restrooms on the course, so please plan accordingly.
Course Maps:
We’ll continue our new course from the high school to the Rail Trail and south to what we’ve dubbed “Phil’s Hill” for our unique turn around. Then back north on the Rail Trail to Mulberry Street and finish in front of the high school.
7-milers will add on a 1-mile out/back on the Rail Trail from Mulberry Street north, then flip and come back to join the finishing stretch to the high school.

Pizza
We’re excited to welcome back Greek’s Pizzeria. We will need to be more judicious in handing out slices so all finishers have some pizza after their races – please help us to be more balanced in the pizza allocations.
Volunteers:
We could use a few volunteers to fill a few key roles to help us put on the Groundhog. Course marshals/sentries, aid station volunteers, plus pre-race packet pick up (which allows you to also run/walk the race if you would like to both help and race).
We’ll also need a couple more volunteers this year to expand to add the 7-milers, plus some folks at the high school to help with post-race refreshments.
Shout out to our Zionsville students who continue to bring a good crew to help with our aid station and on course management as well.
Run Appropriate to the Conditions:
Note that the weather and road conditions are frequently poor (snow, some ice) this time of year; however, the race WILL be held on this date if at all possible. We do our best to clear the course to make it safe.
